In our practice, we work with children, adolescents and adults presenting with a broad range of issues using primarily traditional psychotherapy. We also use contemporary evidence-based treatments at times on a
case-by-case basis.
While our therapists are trained to work with clients in many different areas of expertise, there are some common areas in which people often seek therapeutic treatment, including anxiety disorder, OCD, and trauma.
On this page, you’ll find detailed descriptions of the most common services we provide at Therapia. Every client is unique, which means that treatments can vary. For more information about a specific treatment mentioned on this page, please see our Treatments page.
Anxiety & Mood Disorders
Anxiety is extreme worry or nervousness. Situational anxiety, like before an important exam or job interview, is a normal and expected part of life. This type of anxiety is temporary, and after the intimidating event has passed or the worrisome situation has been resolved, the symptoms of anxiety should ease. On the other hand, if your anxiety is constant and has begun to affect your daily life, you may have an anxiety disorder. With an anxiety disorder, the symptoms of anxiety can persist and even worsen over time seemingly without a cause.
Autism Spectrum Disorder
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is the name of a group of developmental disorders. The reason autism spectrum disorders are called “spectrum” disorders is that they affect people differently and to different degrees. Please note, Asperger's syndrome is technically no longer a diagnosis on its own; it is now part of the broader category called ASD. Asperger’s syndrome is what doctors call a "high-functioning" type of ASD, which means the symptoms are less severe than other kinds of disorders on the spectrum. Social (pragmatic) Communication Disorder (SCD) is a new diagnosis on the spectrum that shares some symptoms with Asperger's.
Fertility & Alternative Family Planning
Family Planning is the process of deciding, as an individual or as a couple, how many children you (and your partner) want to have and how you want to go about accomplishing that goal. Building and implementing your unique family plan is a journey with up and downs. Trying to get pregnant later in life can often involve invasive medical procedures that can become tiring, stressful, and anxiety-provoking over time. Repeated failed cycles can wear on you. You may question your femineity or your value as a mother, partner, and/or woman. And for those of us who experience pregnancy loss, sometimes multiple times over the course of the journey, we find ourselves struggling with grief, anger, self-doubt, and a multitude of other complicated emotions.
Mild Traumatic Brain Injuries
A traumatic brain injury is one that disrupts the normal function of the brain, such as a strike to the head or extreme whiplash. In order for the injury to be considered mild, the patient must be fully conscious 30 minutes after the injury or less, they must score between 13 and 15 on the Glasgow Coma Scale 30 minutes after the injury, and they must not suffer from posttraumatic amnesia for more than 24 hours after the injury.
Grief Counseling
Everyone experiences grief in their own way. We create a confidential, safe place where you can feel comforted and understood while learning to manage the changes and challenges that come with all types of loss — illness, age, sudden or accidental death, suicide, child or pregnancy loss.
Couples Counseling
It takes hard work to maintain a healthy relationship. Sometimes, even when both people are doing their very best, they don’t know how to resolve differences. When this happens to two people in a romantic relationship, they may decide to seek out couples counseling. Couples counseling involves meetings between the couple and a therapist during which the couple learns about themselves and their relationship in order to solve problems and grow closer to each other.
Trauma
Unfortunately, it is quite common for people to experience trauma. All people are different, and each person responds to trauma differently. While some people are able to move forward with their lives without a second thought, others may struggle to cope. Sometimes people don’t have any immediate response, but experience anxiety, depression, or other challenges later in life as a result of the trauma. Luckily, there are certain types of therapy that are specifically shown to help victims of trauma with their healing.
Child & Teen Psychotherapy
As adults, we often seek out therapists so that we can talk through our emotions and life situations. However, the ability to talk through what we’re feeling and share those feelings with another person is something that is developed and learned over time. In fact, there are several distinct stages of development that we grow through over the course of our lives, and we communicate our emotions differently in each stage.
Parent-Infant (0-3 Years Old)
Bonding & Attachment
Forming a relationship with another person takes time, and an infant is no different. A strong bond between parent and infant isn’t always automatic. Sometimes new parents can feel stressed, anxious, overwhelmed, or depressed, which can bring distance between them and their baby. In other cases, common struggles such as difficulty sleeping or difficulty feeding can make life difficult for parent and child. In any case, it’s normal and ok to ask for help forming a healthy connection with your newborn. Our goal is to facilitate that connection so that it can grow into a trusting, secure, and lasting relationship.
